Hilo's Winter Wonderland (Cont'd)

Here are some pictures that our good friend Macario took of Mauna Kea's first snow fall. I have no clue how he managed to get the clouds off the mountain (he must've photoshopped them off) because they have not let up for the last couple of weeks!

By now the mountain must have much much much more snow, but there is no way to tell from down here in planet Hilo. Our friends that work up on the observatories say that as many as 7 ft of snow have fallen!

Last week (and still right now as I type) has been nothing but Rain, rain, rain, rain, oh that rain, rain, rain.....

For those who have not been here to witness it may think "and so what is different? you guys are always saying how much it rains in Hilo, and how it is the rainiest city in the US, and blah blah blah" right? well.....it has been differentt. It will stop for 15-20 minutes, maybe even 3o and the sun will come out, and then WHAM! it will come down in quantities that are hard to explain....so much water comes down at once it is mind boggling. Forget all the laws of thermo-dynamics, physics and chemistry that help explain the water carrying capacity of air, they don't exist here, the air carries 100x times more water than it is supposed to carry. It is raining so hard when it rains that the rain spout coming down from the gutters on the house roof (a 3" PVC pipe ) flows at max capacity and the water still spills over the side of the gutters (and we have SIX of those pipes!)

In any case we have the kayaks tied to the side of the front door just in case we need to kayak out of here....
